Old Railroad Bridge Wetlands, by the Gaoping (Dashu District)

The Old Railroad Bridge Wetlands alongside the high banks of the Gaoping River are the largest artificial wetlands in Taiwan, encompassing an area of 126 hectares. Emulating the features of natural wetlands, they serve as an ecological greenbelt near the riverbank that purifies water and restores habitat for fauna and flora. By harnessing the power of nature to filter polluted water, these wetlands provided space for aquatic plants to grow and attracted migratory birds to return. Unfortunately, the Old Railroad Bridge Wetlands were largely destroyed in 2009 due to flooding from Typhoon Morakot. Those events demonstrate that engineering projects involving rivers demand extremely careful planning. All of nature’s variables must be taken into account.
